On International Day of Charity HRH Crown Princess Katherine sends a message to all people, encouraging them to engage in humanitarian work, so that we can all create a better world, as “there is no greater joy in life, then the Joy of Giving, and knowing that you have made a difference in somebody else’s life”.
The International Day of Charity is a day observed annually on 5 September. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. It was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities, to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities for individuals, charitable, philanthropic and volunteer organizations on the local, national, regional and international level.
As stated by the United Nations, charity, provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. Charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, supplement public services in health care, education, housing and child protection. It assists in the advancement of culture, science, sports, and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of the marginalized and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict situations.
“Everybody who has, at least once, got involved in charity work will tell you that this noble activity enriches the lives not only of the people who receive help, but also of those who provide it. I learned from my parents, who taught me that by their own example, there is no greater joy in life, than the Joy of Giving. I want everybody not only to know that but to feel it themselves.
There are so many tragic fates, and I have seen very well in my own work how the smallest contribution can make a positive impact on somebody’s life. A small effort can make such a huge difference. When we are united and working together, we can do much more. That is why I call upon all people who have kindness in their hearts and care for others, to give their contribution, to provide aid to those who need our assistance, but also a kind word, and a helping hand. And the greatest prize anybody can receive is the knowledge that you have made a difference in somebody else’s life. With charity work, with dedication and determination to help, we are creating a better, nicer world for everybody.” stated HRH Crown Princess Katherine.
